I moved

I've decided to switch to Wordpad. I like the features that they offer over there a little more than blogger. I'm going to leave this blog here since I can't import it over there. One of these days I'll back it up so I don't lose it forever.

The new address is http://austrya.wordpress.com

See you there!

Quick update

I’m still working on my scarf for The Red Scarf Project, but I also started my socks last night too. I have found that if I have more than one project going on at the same time, it keeps me from getting bored. I’ve mostly been doing my scarf when I’m on the way to and from work (Jason drives). I’m about a foot or so into it and it’s turning out pretty well. I’ll have to take a pic of my progress so far later tonight.

So far the socks are easy, but I have a feeling I’m going to have a problem when I get to the heel. Hopefully I can find something online to help me out. If not, I’ll have to take it up to the yarn shop and see if she can help me.

After the scarf, I’m going to attempt to make a stocking with the leftover yarn. I have a fuzzy white yarn to use at the top. I am planning on making a stocking for everyone in the family for Christmas next year and if I want to get it done, I need to get started ASAP. I also need to keep working on Gracie’s sweater which is also in progress.

As far as the GD:

I got my insulin!! Yipee! It’s not so bad actually. I have this little pen thing filled with Levemir, which is a slow acting insulin. I only have to give myself a shot at night before bed at this point. I can’t tell if it’s helping with my numbers or not. My fasting number was low, my breakfast number was high, and my lunch number was low. We’ll give it a few days and see how it goes.

We had another ultrasound yesterday and she’s measuring right on, which is good because GD can cause you to have large babies. We don’t want that.

I’ve also lost 3 pounds. I guess that’s what happens when you are forced to stop eating junk.

Saturday

We had a pretty good day today. We started off by going to the used book sale at the Clinton library. The kids got a bunch of books and I got a book. Total spent $5.50! After the book sale, Austin and I headed over to the Clinton Woolen Mill Yarn Shop. I picked up some yarn to start my scarf for the Red Scarf Project and some size 4 double pointed needles to make my socks.

I was really surprised by the prices in the yarn shop. They are very reasonable, which is really nice to see for a change. That was my first time buying yarn from anyplace other than Wal-Mart or JoAnn's. I can't wait to go back to there and browse when I have more time. I was telling the owner a little bit about how I was planning on making my first pair of socks and she said if I got stuck and needed any help just to bring it in there. How awesome is that?

Ok, on with the day. We then headed to Ann Arbor where we went to Mongolian BBQ for lunch. I figure that is one of the few carb friendly places to eat since I can control what goes into my meal. After lunch we headed to the used book sale at the Ann Arbor library. The kids got a bunch of books there. I think Austin got 8 and Ryan got 6 or 7, Jason got 1 and I got 2. Total spent $13!!

Anyways, here's a pic of the books I got and a pic of my scarf in progres:

GD!

Let me tell you about Gestational Diabetes. It’s not any fun – AT ALL.

Ok, so, I went in for my glucose test and failed it miserably. I got 216 and the target was 185. That’s bad enough that they didn’t even need to send me for the 3 hour test. I have GD. So I go to see the nurse and get a prescription for a little machine that sucks up my blood and tells me what level my sugar is at. It’s actually a pretty cool little device. I have a finger poker thing that has a little lancet in it. I hold it to my finger and press the button and get a drop of blood. I insert a test strip into the meter and touch the end of it to the drop of blood and it sucks it up like a straw. See, I told you it was cool.

I have to test my blood 4x a day. Once in the morning before I eat anything and after each meal. I also have to eat 3 meals and 3 snacks. Breakfast has to have 15g of carbs (equivalent to a slice of bread), must contain protein (eggs), no fruit or juice or milk. Lunch is 45g of carbs and at least 3 ounces of protein, same with dinner. Snacks are 15-30 (preferably 30) carbs. I’m not allowed to eat anything made with white flour and I can’t have any empty carbs. So nothing sugary or nothing without fiber.

It’s hard to not eat junk. I love candy and sugar and sweets. The junkiest thing I’ve had to eat in the past week was a tablespoon of strawberry preserves slathered on my whole wheat English muffin. I think it’s a shock to my system. I cried a lot the first couple of days because my numbers are still high even though I’m following the diet, because I wanted junk, because there is nothing good to eat that doesn’t have carbs, because I don’t really like meat all that much, because cooking takes longer now, etc. I’m kind of over that now, except for the cooking thing. I still hate that. We need to get a George Foreman grill or something like that. It is depressing to go into the grocery store and read labels and find that EVERYTHING has carbs in it. I bought steaks and wanted to marinade them and the marinades are chock full o’ carbs too. No wonder type 2 diabetes is on the rise, it’s very, very hard to follow a low carb diet.

So, I’ve been doing the GD thing for a week now and it’s obvious that I need to be put on some insulin at night to help with my fasting numbers. I go to see the perinatologist about it on Tuesday. I have a feeling that I will also have to go on it before meals too since my numbers are above target quite a bit. A lot of the reason my numbers are off is because GD is hormonal too. For instance, I eat the same thing every morning for breakfast because, well, there isn’t anything else to eat except eggs. So I have 2 scrambled eggs with a little ham and cheese mixed in and a slice of whole wheat toast. It’s 13g carbs. On New Years day when I tested and hour after eating, my sugar was at 102. This morning, I ate the same thing and my sugar was at 155, it was 118 yesterday. I can’t win!

Ugh

Yeah, so I have Gestational Diabetes and it sucks. I love carbs way too much. Plus, I was poking my finger to test my blood in the side of my index finger and now it hurts when I knit. So, I didn’t get much knitting done over break. I did manage to finish knitting my drawstring gift bag, but I haven’t had a chance to felt it yet. I also started a bag using the pattern for the Irish Hiking Scarf. I need something to carry by testing supplies in. It’s about 1/3 of the way done.

I did manage to read a book while I was off of work. I read O Pioneers by Willa Cather yesterday

Something other than a scarf

I finished Catherine’s sweater. I really hope it fits her. I’m a little worried about the arms though, they seem like they’ll be a little tight. If it doesn’t fit, I’ll just keep it for Gracie and then make Catherine another one. It really didn’t take me long at all.

My next project (it changes every day) is going to be a felted bag made with the Moda Dea “Cartwheel” yarn. I’ll probably start that sometime today.

We really need to go TODAY and get a baby gate for the living room/foyer area. We haven’t bought one yet because the kind we need to get is expensive and he really wasn’t paying much attention to the stairs. Well, he’s recently decided that he loves to climb stairs and wants to do it all day long. He’s really fast at it too. So, in the meantime, we put a couple of the kitchen chairs laid sideways across there so he couldn’t get through. We’ll last night he learned how to climb over the chairs. I swear I gave birth to a monkey.

Moda Dea - Yay!

Well, I decided that I didn’t want to continue the pink sweater for Catherine right now. It was taking me forever and there was no way that I would have had it done in time for Christmas. I will work on that after Christmas and it will be for Gracie. I decided to use my Lion Brand Boucle Yarn in Taffy to make Catherine’s sweater. It’s bulkier and I can use size 13 needles which make it go faster. I have the back and one of the sides of the front done. I should be able to finish it by tomorrow.

I went to JoAnn’s last night and bought 2 balls of Moda Dea “Cartwheel” in Bronzeberry hoping it would be enough to make a pair of socks. Looks like it’s not quite the yarn I needed for socks and it wasn’t enough. So I went on eBay this morning and ordered 3 balls of Moda Dea “Sassy Stripes” in Polo to do the job. I got all 3 balls, plus shipping for $11.96 which I thought was a pretty good deal. It’s probably a ball more than I will need, but I figure if they turn out, I might make Gracie some matching socks too. I think I’ll use the Cartwheel to try a little felted bag. I have never felted before, but the yarn is 100% wool, so it should work, right?

I’m almost done with my Christmas shopping. We just need to go to the mall to get Julia a gift certificate and I need to go to the bookstore to get Austin a couple of books and to get Soren’s book. I need to finish Catherine’s sweater and make Soren’s blanket. I need to learn how to get things done earlier instead of waiting until the last minute!

Manly hipster?

I finished my red Thick ‘n Thin scarf and also made Jason a “manly hipster” scarf. If that’s not an oxymoron, I don’t know what is…I’ll take pics as soon as we get our new camera. The old camera is terrible for taking pics of anything, let alone trying to get a close up shot of a scarf.

The project I’m currently working on is a baby sweater. If I have it finished before Sunday, I’ll give it to Catherine for Christmas. If not, it’s for Gracie. It’s a dark pink color and it’s made with sport weight yarn and size 6 needles. I’ll get some pics of that in progress too. I’m pretty happy with the way it’s turning out so far…

We’re getting our new camera sometime this week. We’ve decided on a Canon A630. It’s just a matter of finding time to go to Best Buy to pick it up.
